When it's more than just a phase.

Big changes in life, school troubles, and just wanting to fit in can make growing up a challenging time. Sometimes, these hurdles can make a child feel sad, anxious, or even angry. As these feelings pile up, they may become distant, less playful, or struggle with daily tasks. Sometimes, they just need a bit of help to share their feelings and talk about what’s on their mind.  Parenting is the most challenging job in the world.  We are here to support both you and your child on your journey.

Together, we can help navigate these challenges, helping your child adapt and flourish in every aspect of their life.

Diving deeper into Child therapy

Growing up isn’t just fun and games. It’s a journey, and just like any adventure, there can be rough patches. Kids, even though they’re young, feel big emotions, and sometimes they don’t know how to talk about them. That’s where child therapy can lend a helping hand.

As a parent, it can be heart-wrenching to see your little one in distress. Child therapy is like giving them a toolbox. Inside, they’ll find ways to understand their feelings, express them, and learn that they can overcome challenges.

Here are some areas where we can help:

School can sometimes be a tough place for kids. Learning new things, making friends, and trying to fit in – it’s all a big deal. Therapy offers all children a safe space to talk about school worries and find fun ways to handle them.

Children with learning or developmenetal disabilities may find school additionally challenging. Children with ADHD might feel like their thoughts are a jumbled puzzle, making focusing a challenge. Those with autism can find the social world of school confusing, and sensory experiences intense. Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder often struggle with memory and managing their emotions, turning everyday learning into a complex maze.

These specific challenges, like a restless mind, social confusion, or emotional turbulence, can make the everyday school experience feel like climbing a mountain. Assignments, friendships, and even just the ring of the school bell can trigger anxiety and uncertainty.

At Veritas Psychotherapy and Counselling, we have members of our team specifically trained to help these children untangle their feelings and challenges. Tailored strategies turn ADHD’s restlessness into focused energy. For children with autism, therapy decodes the confusing social signals, and sensory experiences get a bit less overwhelming. Kids with FASD find ways to navigate their emotional world and memory mazes. Every session is a step towards turning school from a challenge into an adventure.

Moving homes, a new sibling, or changes in the family can be confusing for kids. It’s big stuff! Therapy provides them a place to share their feelings and understand that change, even if it’s hard, is a part of life.

Every family is unique, with its own rhythm and rules. But sometimes, big changes like divorce or smaller shifts in the home can cause tensions and misunderstandings. For a child, these changes can be confusing and overwhelming. They might feel caught in the middle, wonder if they’re to blame, or struggle with adjusting to new routines. In therapy, we create a comforting space for them to voice their feelings and worries. We help them navigate these challenges, ensuring they recognize their feelings are valid. Together, we explore ways to foster understanding and connection within their evolving family landscape.
Making friends is an integral part of childhood. For many kids, bonds are formed in classrooms and playgrounds with ease. But all friendships can have their ups and downs. Our therapists can help guide your child on how to be a good friend and how to deal with friendship troubles. Children with learning and developmental disabilities, such as autism, can find navigating the social landscape particularly challenging. Struggles with self-esteem or understanding the unwritten rules of interaction can turn playgrounds into intimidating spaces. Therapy transforms these challenges into opportunities. Children learn their value and discover their ability to forge connections. They can practice the dance of conversation in a safe, nurturing environment. Each session builds their confidence and social toolkit, turning the world of friendships from a puzzle into a playground of possibilities.
Children often grapple with intense emotions, and for those with conditions like Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), autism, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), these emotional waves can feel overwhelming. They might experience heightened feelings of sadness, anger, or anxiety, intensified by the unique ways their brains process emotions. Expressing and managing these emotions can sometimes be as challenging as understanding them. In therapy, we embark on a journey to navigate these tumultuous waters. For a child with ADHD, the fluctuating energy levels are harnessed to explore and articulate emotions effectively. Kids with autism are guided to connect the dots between their feelings and expressions, turning the abstract into the tangible. For those with FASD, therapy provides strategies to cope with the intensity of their emotions, offering a pathway to emotional regulation. It’s a space of discovery and learning, where emotions are not daunting but an avenue for growth and self-understanding.
Kids can be mean sometimes. Whether it’s at school or in the neighborhood, hurtful words or actions can leave a lasting mark. This isn’t just about feeling sad for a day; it can lead to trauma, which is a deep emotional hurt that doesn’t easily go away. In therapy, we help them understand it’s not their fault and address this trauma. We offer ways to cope, heal, and build back their confidence, ensuring they know they’re valued and loved.
Every child is unique, with their own set of talents. But sometimes, they might feel unsure of themselves. In therapy, we encourage them to see how special they are, helping them feel good about themselves.

Growing up is an adventure, filled with lessons and memories. With a little help along the way, it can be an amazing journey, filled with joy and learning.

Questions About Child Therapy

Child therapy offers a safe space for kids to express their feelings, understand themselves better, and cope with challenges. Just like adults, children can benefit from talking to someone outside their family circle, and therapists provide that objective, supportive ear.
The duration of therapy varies for each child and their unique needs. Some kids benefit from short-term interventions, while others might need ongoing support. Regular check-ins with the therapist can provide insights into the progress and projected timelines.
Be open and honest about the process. Let them know they’re going to meet someone who’s really good at listening and helping kids navigate their feelings.
It’s not uncommon for kids to be hesitant at first. It can be beneficial to involve them in the decision-making process, explain the purpose in kid-friendly terms, and ensure they know it’s a space for them to feel better and understood.

Signs vary, but if you’ve noticed significant changes in your child’s mood, behaviour, school performance, or social interactions, it might be time to consider therapy. However, even if there aren’t clear “signs,” therapy can be a proactive approach to understanding and addressing potential concerns.
