Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotion-focused therapy is a type of therapy that was developed by Les Greenberg. This approach to therapy focuses on helping individuals understand and express their emotions in a healthy and adaptive way. The goal of emotion-focused therapy is to help individuals develop a greater emotional awareness and learn to use their emotions in a constructive manner.

In emotion-focused therapy, the therapist works with the individual to help them identify and express their emotions in a safe and supportive environment. The therapist may use a variety of techniques, such as role-playing and guided imagery, to help the individual explore and express their emotions.

As the individual becomes more comfortable expressing their emotions, the therapist helps them to develop new strategies for managing and coping with their emotions. This may involve teaching the individual how to regulate their emotions, communicate their feelings to others, and develop a more positive outlook.

One of the key aspects of emotion-focused therapy is the focus on the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the individual. The therapist works to create a supportive and accepting environment where the individual feels safe to express their emotions and explore their thoughts and feelings.

Overall, emotion-focused therapy is a valuable approach to treating a wide range of emotional difficulties, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. By helping individuals develop a greater emotional awareness and learn to manage their emotions in a healthy way, emotion-focused therapy can lead to significant improvements in their mental and emotional well-being.

EFT helps individuals to:

  • Become more aware of their emotions
  • Welcome, allow and regulate emotions
  • Describe emotions clearly and in detail
  • Evaluate whether the emotions are helpful or hurtful
  • Identify the source of unhelpful emotions
  • Develop alternative, healthy ways of coping with situations that often elicit hurtful emotions

Unlike other therapeutic approaches, EFT assumes that emotion can be a source of healing and works with specific emotions to increase adaptation.
